I am looking at going to law school for Fall 2009. I am currently an undergrad in finance at Arizona State University with a 3.47 GPA. I am taking the June LSAT, and practice tests have given me around an average of 147 (150 being my highest so far) and am looking at the University of San Diego. I’m not sure I will make the cut for this, and have also looked Western California Law School and Thomas Jefferson Law School. Is it worth going to either of these if I don’t get into USD? Do I have much of a chance of getting into any of these schools? If I don’t get into USD, but I get into the other 2, should I still go to one of them, or just not go to law school. I would really like to be a lawyer.
Sorry, Yes I meant Fall 2010
First of all, I would suggest that you check with these schools to make sure that they are still accepting applications. I will be starting law school in the Fall of 2009, and most of the schools I applied to had March 1st deadlines. If you mean Fall of 2010, you still have plenty of time to retake (or just reschedule) the LSAT and get your score up. Either way, I suggest that you visit the LSAC website (www.lsac.org). There you can find information about all accredited law schools, including the LSAT scores and GPA ranges schools are likely to admit. Also, law schools generally post information like this on their websites.
If you are wanting to start law school in the Fall, would it be possible for you to put it off for another year? You say you really want to be a lawyer, and I would suggest taking another year to get some work experience, study for the LSAT, etc., instead of just walking away from the career you want to have. There’s no need to give up your dream just because it is going to take you longer to get there. As for whether or not you should attend the other two schools if you get in, I do not know enough about them to answer that. But the lower rank the school you attend has, the harder your job search is going to be after law school. In my opinion, it would be better to get into the best school you can instead of going to a school with a substantially lower rank. I hope I was of some help.
Edit: Since you mean Fall of 2010, I would consider waiting to take the LSAT. I am not sure how long you have studied so far, but I wouldn’t take the LSAT unless you feel you have a good chance of getting a score that you would be pleased with. I used the PowerScore books and I thought they were very helpful. I think your opportunities at USD would be better since it is a first-tier school and the other two are not.
