I’m from Canada and I’m planning to go to America for University. I’m interested in becoming a criminal lawyer in the US but I’m not sure if that’s a good idea for me. Do American lawyers get paid more than Canadian lawyers?

I heartily disagree with both posters. Now is not the time to become a lawyer in either jurisdiction. There’s simply not enough work. Tuition and cost of living are rising, and the actual salary or income you’ll get as a lawyer will not be enough to justify it. I don’t know your particular situation, but it’s awful everywhere in the legal job market. There might be a growing market in India, since that’s where I hear legal jobs are going.

Depends on the state. New York, for example, will let you sit for the bar, as will Texas. And those are just the two I have researched.

The problem usually isn’t sitting for the bar, but getting a job. There are more than enough JDs looking for work in the United States. Unless you have some connection in the US or plan to open up your own practice, you’ll have great difficulty finding legal employment. If you want to be successful in the US, then your best bet is going for a JD here.

The lawyer is charging more than two thousand US dollars to help me in the entire process and I am wondering if it is really worth it, if I can do it and get the same results. Why waste money if he is not going to speed up my husband’s coming.

No, he can’t speed up the process, it is what it is. take a look at the I-130 and see if it makes sense to you or sounds like Greek. if you can’t make heads or tails, get a lawyer. otherwise, unless there’s some particular complication with your husband’s situation, do it yourself.

Going to begin applying for the US k-1 fiance visa in the next few weeks. I am curious if those with experience think a lawyer is necessary or will be helpful? I am located in British Columbia and my fiance is in California. We are trying to time the process so acceptance (if granted) occurs when I am finished school around April or May next year. We have a pretty normal case. Both in our late 20′s, he is working and meets the affidavit of support guidelines, etc.

Any suggestions are welcome (constructive only please)

Unless there’s something unusual about your case, you shouldn’t really need a lawyer. but read through the I-129f petition and see if you think this is something you can handle or not. If it reads like Greek to you, get a lawyer.
