And to China: A follow up to Wednesday’s story about a Shanghai lawyer who’s defending a Falun Gong practitioner arrested for making DVDs. As part of the Chinese regime’s ongoing persecution of the spiritual practice, the regime has made it difficult for lawyers to defend Falun Gong practitioners…and practitioners are arrested for things that would not be against the law in any other country, such as making legal DVDs or handing out flyers.
STORY:
It would appear that a performance celebrating ancient Chinese tradition and the Lunar New Year are too sensitive for Chinese communist authorities.
Liu Peng is a teacher from Shanghai. He says he was arrested after making legal copies of DVDs containing performances Divine Performing Arts’ Chinese New Year Spectacular.
On October 21st under tight police presence, Liu appeared before Shanghai’s Local Court. His defense attorney, who we are referring to as Mr. Li… says the charges are ridiculous.
[Mr. Li, Defense Attorney]:
“The DVD is only about the celebration program of Chinese New Year, it’s performing arts. But the government thinks it’s harmful to people – that’s ridiculous. Because the standard the Chinese communist regime uses to judge is not purely whether its contents is good or not; their judgement is based on where the stuff comes from, who made it – their logic is utterly ridiculous.”
Liu used to teach at the Shanghai Police Academy but because he practices Falun Gong, he was kidnapped by authorities on two separate occasions. He was sent to a labor camp for four-and-a-half years where he suffered torture and electric batons. Liu’s wife was also detained in a labor camp for one year.
Liu’s attorney says most lawyers in China dare not handle Falun Gong cases. And it goes a step further… they not only refuse to take them, but even ist communist authorities to persecute Falun Gong practitioners.
[Mr. Li, Defense Attorney]:
“Most local lawyers fear pressure from the government, so sometimes the court needs to order some lawyers to defend Falun Gong practitioners, but most of time they don’t defend the practitioners at all. That is because of the pressure from government.”
